Colonial Elementary School Grade Improves
Colonial Elementary eared a grade of 'B' for the 2007 - 2008 school year, up from a 'C' the previous year. School adminstration attributes the improved grade to the hard work of Colonial's students, parents, and staff.
New Reading Series
Colonial has chosen SRA Reading Mastery as its reading curriculum.
Reading Mastery is a research based curriculum that helps students decode and comprehend the meaning of print effortlessly. It has proven to be especially effective helping struggling readers who are at risk of failure. Some of its features of the curriculum are:
Strategy-based instruction that allows students to learn more efficiently
Ongoing assessments and specific guidelines for remediation to help you make effective instructional decisions
Addresses all five essential components of Reading: phonemic awareness, phonics and word analysis, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension
Develops decoding, word recognition and comprehension skills that transfer to other subject areas
We expect our students to very well with the new series. Our staff is excited about the learning opportunities this new series offers!

SMILE Writing is the focus of our writing curriculum for students in grades 2 through 5. Weekly lesson cycles incorporate the writing process, 6 + 1 Trait Writing philosophy, Writer's Workshop strategies and standards based lessons to reach all learning styles. Skills based rubrics are used to facilitate data-driven instruction, leading to the development of exceptional student writers. Colonial's students scored highly on Florida Writes! in 2007 and the SMILE's curriculum was part of the success. The number of our 4th grade students meeting high standard in writing increased by 12% since we adapted the SMILE curriculum.

Renaissance Place will allow students to easily access Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, and the rest of the Advantage Learning Sytem (ALS) family of products through one website. Our faculty believes that the ALS curriculum directly impacts our student's achievement, and numerous research studies and our own data support this belief.
ALS has developed a new tool for parents to monitor their children's progress in school called Home Connect. With Home Connect, parents and students logging from home will be able to:
- See progress toward reading goals.
- Conduct book searches.
- Review quiz results.
- View number of books read, words read, and quizzes passed.
- And much, much more.

Access Home Connect often and celebrate your child's success!
